地表に吸収される太陽エネルギーの半分以上は水の蒸発に使われるが、観測による制約は不十分であった。気象観測とリモートセンシングの結果、1982～1997年で年7.1±1.0mm増加し、1998〜2008年は増加していない。蒸発散に対する土壌水分の制約が示唆される。

5,580万年前の炭素同位体比負異常は暁新世始新世境界の温暖極大期（PETM）と関連しているが、酸素同位体不異常前に温暖期があることを示す海洋のデータがあることから議論が続いていた。ワイオミング州から得られた哺乳動物の歯に含まれる酸素同位体の分析結果、炭素同位体比負異常前に５℃の大陸における温暖化があったことが明らかになった。
