    国際耳石学会に参加しました

    こんにちは!修士1年の青沼です。10月8日から10月13日にかけてチリ・ビーニャデルマール(バルパライソ近郊)で開催された国際耳石学会(7th International Otolith Symposium)に参加しましたので、滞在報告をブログで書きたいと思います。なお、横山研からの参加者は私一人でしたが、白井研から白井先生などが参加されました。
    国際耳石学会は魚類の耳石を用いた研究に関する集会であり、魚類に関するさまざまな事象を耳石の分析によって解明しようとする研究が集まっていました。私自身国際学会での発表は初めてで慣れないことも多かったですが、無事に発表を行うことができました。
    ちなみに、国際学会での一般的なあれこれ(?)については安東さんが以前に書いています。これらはこちらの学会でも同じような感じでした。

    初日は開会式・オープニングセレモニーが夕方から行われました。街の中心部にある博物館のガーデン(屋外)が会場になっており、立食パーティ形式になっていました。開会式の後、チリの伝統のダンスなどが披露され、非常に興味深い文化体験になったのを覚えています。

    二日目からは本格的に学会が始まり、口頭発表などが行われました。朝と昼食後にKeynote講演者の講演(1時間程度)があり、その他の時間で一般の発表がされるというスケジュールでした。発表は9時から18時ごろまで行われており、昼休みの他に11時ごろと16時ごろにコーヒーブレイクがありました。飲み物の他に軽食も提供され、長い学会中の良いリフレッシュになりました。チリのお菓子は美味しいものが多かったです。
    学会会場はいわゆるIR(統合型リゾート)内にあるホテルの会議場となっており、豪華な内装が目を引きました。1階のカジノから会議場までが吹き抜けになっており、少し気にはなりましたが(音が聞こえてきました...)……

    ポスターセッションは10月10日の夕方に行われました。あまり大きな学会ではないので、コアタイムは一度だけです。ここでも興味深い発表が多くあり、さまざまな研究者の方と話をする機会がありました。なお、ここでは食事とアルコールも提供されたので、ある程度時間が経った後は懇親会のような雰囲気になっていました。 ところで、ポスターセッションの時に耳石を使って年齢特定をやってみるというイベントが行われました。自分はそちらの分野はあまりやっていなかったので少し外れた値を出してしまいましたが、体験という意味で良い機会になりました。
    中日の10月11日はワークショップの日です。ちょうど耳石の化学に関するワークショップが開かれていましたので、そこに参加いたしました。様々なtrace element / isotope などについて話があり、非常に中身が濃かったことを覚えています。短い時間で多くの事柄を説明されたので、発表についていくのが少し大変でした。
    10月12日の夕方には夕食会(Banquet)が市内中心部のホテルで行われました。最初は格式高い食事会となっており、ビュッフェ形式で美味しい食事をとっていたのですが、途中からDJが出てきたので参加者みんな大騒ぎの会になりました。自分を含め東大の方々は夜遅くならないくらいにホテルに戻ったのですが、一部の参加者は朝までここで飲んでいたようです。

    初めて国際学会に参加した感想ですが、海外の研究者・学生と沢山コミュニケーションを撮ることができ、貴重な経験になりました。自身の研究にコメントをくれる研究者も多くいて、研究に関する様々な示唆を得ることができました。この経験を糧に、今後の研究を進めていきたいと考えています。 

    最後になりますが、発表内容についてコメントをくださった共著者の皆様、そして今回の渡航に関して資金援助をしてくださった内田海洋学術基金と文科省(トビタテ!留学JAPAN)に感謝を申し上げます。ありがとうございました。 

    なお、学会終了後も現地の大学で実験を行うため、数日間チリに滞在しました。休日にこの街の近辺を巡ったので、その時の写真を添付いたします。

    魚市場です。太平洋に面したこの街は漁業が盛んで、多くの海産物が市場で売られています。真ん中にある料理はセビーチェという魚介マリネで、酸っぱくておいしかったです。

    隣接する街バルパライソは、グラフィティが有名な街です。海港都市の街並みは世界遺産にも登録されています。
