インド、クレーター湖の調査に行ってきました

こんにちは、中村です。
クレーター湖の調査に行ってきました。

ロナ湖は隕石衝突によってできたクレーター内にある湖です。
玄武岩に衝突した地球上で残されている唯一のクレーターであるため、
火星探査の比較対象として注目されています。

今後、湖底堆積物の掘削により、インドモンスーン変動の復元をする予定です。
今回は事前調査で、宇宙線照射生成核種10Be,26Al,36Cl用のサンプルも採取できました。

修論の手法を生かして隕石衝突の年代や、クレーターの地形学に制約が与えられると期待しています。

乾期のロナ湖は地球とは思えない光景が広がっていました。
周囲は平らなデカン高原で、クレータのリムに立つと、360度地平線まで見渡せます。
ベージュ色の大地に植生がちらほら、そして遠くはダストでかすんだ青空が広がっています。

この湖の底にゆっくりと堆積した泥にはインドモンスーンの変動記録が刻まれているはず!

コアスクール@高知

こんにちは、M1の関です。
3月10日-12日に、高知コアセンターで開かれたコアスクールの酸素炭素同位体比コースに参加してきました。
私はこれから研究で酸素同位体比を測定する予定なので、その勉強のための参加です。

去年の4月に先輩方と一緒に行って以来約1年ぶりの高知、今回は前回見れなかった分析機器の見学もしてきました。
高知コアセンターってほんとにたくさんの機械があるんですね。
MC-ICP-MSが思ったよりも大きくてびっくりしました。

さて、実習のほうですが、今回は班員4人で分析を習いながら、わいわいと楽しく勉強してきました。
有孔虫の観察では、高知大の池原先生に私の研究の話によく出てくるPulleniatina Obliquiloculataという種類の有孔虫を頂きました。ありがとうございます!!
はじめは全部同じに見えた有孔虫も、習っているうちに少し違いが分かるようになってきました。
自分の研究にかかわるやつだと探すのに気合が入ります。


酸素炭素同位体比分析を行うIsoprimeで分析の設定をしています。


今回は高知大学の食堂が工事中のため、近くにご飯を食べるところがありませんでしたが、毎日夜は街まで出かけて高知の食を堪能しました!


コアスクール講師の皆さん、世話人の皆さん、本当にありがとうございました!!

横山先生、ハワイ訪問

横山先生が、JSPS-NASの会議にあわせてハワイ大の国際太平洋研究センターを訪問されました。

Dr. Oliver TimmやProf. Axel Timmermannなどと交流されたそうです。

ハワイ大はEMICsのLOVECLIMを開発し、物質循環を含んだ気候変動モデル研究を精力的に行っている研究グループで、氷床モデルから海洋酸性化まで様々な共同研究の議論を行うことができたそうです。

今後、ハワイ大とのコネクションが強まっていきそうです。
